Dog Park Set to Open

A soft launch today of Weston’s dog park set the stage for its planned opening for public use on Monday, May 5.

First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor cut the ceremonial ribbon at the gates to the fenced-in park, flanked by some of the citizens who initiated the project back in 2017 and several major donors, including the family of the late Selectman Brian Gordon.

The park is on about 2.8 acres in the middle of 36 acres the town acquired decades ago, setting it aside for future municipal use. A driveway entrance at 22 Lords Highway East leads to a parking area and the park itself.

A procession of guests and dogs was led up the driveway by Maria Calamito (center in the photo above), a principal in the group of citizens who first proposed the dog park in 2017. The group later initiated a 2018 Special Town Meeting where voters approved the plan, which included a commitment by the volunteers to raise funds needed to build the park.

The plan survived years of legal challenges, the last of which was dismissed by a federal judge last November.
