A Chance to Help Siversk, March 21

A house party to aid Weston's sister city Siversk, Ukraine takes place on Thursday, March 21 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Tickets, which start at $50, can be purchased here. Donations are also welcome from those who cannot attend.

The event features light food and refreshments and a discussion with Siversk leadership, First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor, and Iryna Akolzina, who chairs the Weston committee organizing aid for Siversk through Ukraine Aid International, which initiated the Sister City Partnership program.

Most recently, funds raised in Weston have supported a ten-day camp where children from Siversk, long separated by war, can reconnect with classmates and teachers in a safe environment. The committee hopes to raise funds for another camp, giving 40 more Siversk children the opportunity. Each camp costs about $9,000.

Weston funds also provided Siversk with a transport van, which was used to deliver supplies and evacuate citizens during emergencies. More support will apparently be needed. As an illustration of the extreme danger that continues for the remaining residents of Siversk, in February the van was severely damaged by a Russian kamikaze drone, perhaps beyond repair.
