Giving Day Offers Support for Senior Lunches

To keep the ball rolling with a program that served more than 1,200 free lunches last year, Friends of the Weston Senior Activities Center hope for continued community support on Fairfield County’s Giving Day, Thursday, February 24.

Donations of any amount can be made online. (Gifts of $100 or more get a special public shout-out.)

The outdoor lunch program for seniors started two years ago, first out of concern about isolation at the onset of the pandemic. An instant success, it has now become a way for seniors to see friends and strengthen the bonds of community.

Several Weston organizations have joined with the Friends to make the program successful, including the Weston Volunteer Fire Department, EMS, and WestonArts, which arranged performances at lunches by musicians such as Chris Coogan and Karl Schulz. The Weston Adult Soccer League helped get things started in the first year, and Norfield Congregational Church graciously hosted in the second.

The community pitched in as well, with generous donations in last year’s Giving Day event. It made a huge difference.

The plan this year is to offer another ten weeks of picnics, drive-through lunches, and small-group gatherings on the Senior Center’s patio and indoors.

Friends of the Weston Senior Activities Center is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
