Letter: Prejudices Can Be Transmitted

It is unfortunate that antisemitism has reared its ugly head in this beautiful town of Weston. However, this should come as no surprise as Jewish people have been the object of physical attacks, slurs and derision throughout recorded history.

In an essay “Anti-Semite and Jew,” Jean-Paul Sartre uses a phrase about these perpetrators as “being imbibed with their mother’s milk” to illustrate the idea that antisemitic beliefs are often deeply ingrained and absorbed from a very early age.

This expression conveys how these prejudices can be transmitted through culture and upbringing, rather than through conscious, rational thought.

In other words, antisemitism is often passed on from parents to children.

Hopefully, we can come together here and stamp out this evil!
