Sidewalks Phase 2 Info Session Set

Construction of the first phase of the town’s sidewalks plan should begin in a few weeks, and designs of the second phase are far enough along that a public information session has been scheduled.

The virtual session will be held on Tuesday, May 9 at 6:00 pm, on Zoom.

Sidewalks in the second phase extend from Weston Middle School to Lords Highway, then make a right turn and run up to Old Hyde Road. Another section connects the Town Hall campus to Norfield Church.

In addition, a dedicated lane would be built on Weston Road (Route 57) northbound for right turns onto School Road. If all goes well, construction may begin in the spring of 2024.

In the illustration above, Phase 2 sidewalks are in pink. Phase 1 is designated by red lines. Existing sidewalks at the schools are in green.

The aim of the broader sidewalks plan is to provide a safe walking environment in the town center, especially on roads with narrow shoulders and heavy pedestrian traffic, including students.

A planned third phase would create a loop (depicted below). Sidewalks would run down Old Hyde Road to Norfield Road, then proceed down Norfield to where Phase 2 left off.

Phases one and two are mostly funded by state grants, although the Town has borne design costs. Phase 3 would be largely funded by federal grants that are administered by the state Department of Transportation and have already been awarded to the Town.

The public information session is designed as an opportunity to comment and ask questions. Questions can also be sent to the project’s engineer, Victoria Houle, by email.
