The Time For New Representation is Now

As the summer draws to a close and the autumn starts to appear on the horizon, so too does campaign season and midterm elections.

The midterms do not have the same turnout that presidential elections do but that doesn’t mean they’re any less important. I would say that every election, from municipal to federal, are all important. They allow for us to bring in new voices, new minds, new people, to our government. Whether it’s time for a new dog catcher or a new president, going out to vote is important and impacts our future.

With that in mind, I believe it’s time for new representation for Weston and the 135th House District, of which Weston is in.

While Weston is an exceptional place to live, it is in spite of the actions taken by Hartford. Disastrous policies have led to a sizeable increase in our debt over the past decade to a whopping 95 billion dollars. A bill that at some point we will have to pay. We continue to pay more in taxes and continue to receive less in funds from the state. Our state has some of the most exceptional educational facilities in the country yet struggles to keep college graduates in state due to the ever-increasing inability to afford living here. Our current representatives have taken one time federal funds and put them into reoccurring costs which undoubtedly will mean higher taxes as soon as those funds dry out. As I said, it’s time for new representation for Weston in Hartford.

For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Alex Burns, and I’m looking to be that new representation in Hartford for Weston. I’m a Republican and I like to think that I bridge the cautious conservatism that has guided many of Weston’s best Republicans and the youthful reformism found in many people of my age that have driven them to work to continue making America a more equal country.

I have no qualms with working across the aisle to make both Weston and CT a better place. If Republicans propose a bill to cut taxes on the middle or working class, I’ll be the first in line to support it. If Democrats are looking to make our state services more efficient and cost effective, I’ll work with them to make it as fiscally responsible as possible. I’ll put our community before party every time.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Government can be both progressive and solvent. We don’t need to choose between keeping the budget in the black and helping those who need it.

Government works best when those in it are willing to work with other members and compromise for the betterment of their constituents and the state as a whole.

The time for new representation and new ideas isn’t just in two years from now. It’s happening this year on November 8th.
