Weston First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor has announced her candidacy for the 26th State Senate district, following word on Friday that State Senator Ceci Maher, a fellow Democrat, will not seek reelection.

“I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with Senator Maher and deeply appreciate her thoughtfulness, hard work, and graciousness,” said Ms. Nestor in a statement. “While serving as First Selectwoman of Weston has been an honor,” she said, “I believe I have so much more to offer our communities.”

Ms. Nestor has been Weston’s first selectwoman since 2021. Previously, she served on the Board of Selectmen and Board of Education. In her announcement, she cited as accomplishments obtaining and administering more than $30 million in grants for major improvement projects.

“These experiences have given me a clear understanding of both the opportunities and the challenges towns face in working with the state,” she said. “I know how state policies can help communities thrive, and where unnecessary obstacles can actually make it harder for towns to meet the needs of their residents.”

“Those of us who live in Weston know that our lives and communities extend well beyond town lines,” said Ms. Nestor. The 26th State Senate district includes Weston, Westport, Wilton, Redding, and parts of Ridgefield, New Canaan, Darien and Stamford.

She said the district’s municipalities face a common set of financial pressures, including rising healthcare costs, infrastructure needs, and energy and maintenance expenses.

“Every town is working hard to keep communities affordable, maintain strong schools, and manage rising costs responsibly,” said Ms. Nestor. “I will bring a town leader’s perspective to the legislature and focus on policies that support municipalities rather than burden them.”
