Sherwood “Woody” Brewster Bliss, 89

Sherwood “Woody” Bliss died on Monday July 7, 2025 with his two daughters by his side in Charlotte, NC. He was born on April 14, 1936 in Minneapolis, MN to George and Ethel Bliss. He grew up in Scarsdale, NY and attended Cornell University, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering. He had a long and successful career with IBM, and retired after more than 30 years. At IBM, he met and married Prudence Anderson in 1960, with whom he had three children.

Woody was a loving and giving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and mentor who served his community with all his heart. He loved any chance to play games, and always brought a competitive spirit. He lived with his family in Weston, CT for 50 years, until he moved to Charlotte, NC in the fall of 2024.

He loved the town of Weston, where he served on numerous volunteer boards, philanthropic committees, the Board of Selectmen, and was first selectman for four terms. Most recently he served on the Board of Police Commissioners. He was an active member of Norfield Congregational Church, which was near and dear to his heart, even after his move to NC.

He was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Prue Bliss, and his brother, Peter Bliss. He is survived by his three children, David Bliss (Nancy Missert), Barbara Mahnke (Pete), and Susan Bliss (Stan Archibald), his 5 grandchildren, Lyle Bliss (Jordan), Clayton Bliss, Aaron Mahnke (Colleen Horner) and Jake Mahnke, and Alison Archibald, and most recently his great granddaughter Sage Bliss. He is also survived by his long time companion, Martha Diamant.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Norfield Congregational Church, Weston Kiwanis Club, Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, Memory and Movement of Charlotte, or a charity of your choice in Woody’s name.

A memorial service to celebrate Woody’s life will be held at Norfield Congregational Church on Saturday, September 20th at 11:00 am. Inurnment will be private.
