Weston Intermediate School is one of four public schools in the state selected as a Connecticut Blue Ribbon School.
“Congratulations to this year’s honorees on earning this well-deserved distinction, which highlights the extraordinary teaching and learning taking place every day in their classrooms,” said Governor Ned Lamont, announcing the award today.
“This announcement provides the opportunity to highlight what is possible when educators, students, families, and communities work together effectively,” said Connecticut State Department of Education Commissioner Charlene Russell-Tucker.
WIS has been a School of Distinction for the past three years, but the education department notes that “2023-2024 was a particularly strong year,” with the school earning the distinction in every possible category — English language arts (ELA), math, and science — and exceeding the state’s performance index target.
The report also notes that trendlines at WIS “are on an upward trajectory post-pandemic,” and that students with high needs earned their highest index scores in ELA and mathematics compared to all previous years.
The three other public schools recognized this year are House of Arts, Letters, and Science (HALS) Academy in New Britain, Gildersleeve School in Portland, and Green Acres Elementary School in North Haven.
All four had been nominated earlier this year for the national Blue Ribbon Schools Program award, which for more than 40 years celebrated the top performing schools in the United States until it was discontinued this year by the U.S. Department of Education.
The Connecticut Blue Ribbon Schools Program, announced today by Governor Lamont, “continues the tradition of recognizing and highlighting schools that are excelling in academic success.”
