“Field of Dreams,” Aug. 30

It’s all baseball on August 30 in this year’s edition of the popular Movie Under the Stars series by the Weston Commission for the Arts, with an outdoor screening of “Field of Dreams” preceded by baseball and softball games.
The games, coordinated with Weston’s softball and baseball leagues, start at 5:00 on the middle school ball field, complete with an announcer-deejay, hot dogs, and Cracker Jack. You can bring baseball gear, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets.
The movie starts shortly after sunset.

“Field of Dreams” stars Kevin Costner as a struggling Iowa farmer troubled by his broken relationship with his late father, a devoted baseball fan. One evening he has a vision in his cornfield: a baseball diamond. Standing in the middle is the ghost of baseball legend “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.
Then he hears a whisper: “If you build it, he will come.”
So, despite financial hardship and with his wife’s consent, he builds the field. And Shoeless Joe does come — his ghost anyway — along with other players from the infamous 1919 Chicago Black Sox.
But the film isn’t really about baseball. It’s more about going the distance, living your dreams, easing pain, and a lot more which, if you haven’t already seen it, we won’t spoil here.
Other stars in the movie include Ray Liotta, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, and Burt Lancaster, in his final film role. The rain date is August 31.
