The curtain goes up on March 28 for the spring production by Company, the Weston High School drama club, which stages three performances of the musical comedy “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”
On Friday evening the 28th the show goes on at 7:00. On Saturday the 29th, it’s also 7:00, and on Sunday the 30th it’s a matinee at 3:00. Tickets are available here.
The show is a coming-of-age story about a group of pre-teens navigating the pressures of a spelling bee tournament, sharing funny and moving stories from their home lives, spelling along and dreading the sound of the bell that spells defeat.
The Tony Award-winning musical debuted on Broadway in 2005. In Company’s production, you will hear high school students perform songs from the show including “I’m Not That Smart,” “Pandemonium,” and “The I Love You Song” with accompaniment by the Weston High School Pit Orchestra.
The producers promise a few surprises at each performance, possibly including audience members and teachers joining the cast on stage while contestants try to spell their way to victory.
