Swatting Threat Closes High School

On January 23, 2025 at approximately 10:30 am the Weston Communication Center received a call from the Weston Massachusetts Police Department. The Weston Massachusetts Police Department investigated an unsubstantiated social media-based threat to their school and during the preliminary phase of their investigation believed there was a nexus to our high school. The information was immediately passed along to Detective Mogollon to identify potential suspects and to determine if the threats were credible.

Both SROs were immediately directed to the high school to begin safety protocols. Chief Henion and Captain Miceli responded to the pre-designated incident command post along with Superintendent Barbiero, Principal Conetta and school district administrators. Sergeant Arnette, the on-duty patrol officers and Mile of Safety Officer provided scene security and directed arriving mutual aid partners in clearing the high school building and facilities.

The Weston High School Emergency Operation Plan was activated, and in an abundance of caution procedures were implemented to conduct an offsite evacuation where all students and staff were released as an early dismissal. The evacuation was orderly and efficient and the student body performed admirably. The building was searched and ultimately cleared at approximately 12:30 pm. It was determined there was no threat to public safety.

Although the building was cleared and returned to normal operations, the investigation lead by Detective Mogollon continued into the evening hours. Detective Mogollon was able to identify a potential suspect and the information was passed to the FBI and Massachusetts authorities. We will continue to work with the outside investigators to bring the case to closure. This is an active investigation and public disclosure of information is limited at this time. Further information will be released when appropriate.

Unfortunately, these swatting incidents are common and have been happening throughout the region. Now is a good time to speak with your students regarding the severity of making these types of threats in an online format. As displayed today these threats are handled seriously and cause great disruption. There are also serious penalties associated.

In conclusion, it is important to note there are no credible threats to safety at the Weston Public Schools.
