Fire reduced a Weston home to rubble on Thanksgiving Day despite the efforts of Weston firefighters over 16 hours, aided by the departments of six other towns. There were no injuries.

The cause of the blaze at 40 Weston Road is under investigation, but the Weston Volunteer Fire Department reports that a preliminary investigation indicates the fire was “the result of frying a turkey” in the garage.

The WVFD was dispatched to the scene at 3:42 pm on November 28 following the activation of an automatic fire alarm at the residence. The town’s communication center also received 911 calls reporting a garage fire.

The fire was already “well involved” and rapidly spreading into the main house when firefighters arrived. An “aggressive fire attack” was thwarted by the severity of the blaze and structural damage. Efforts were further set back when a vehicle drove over and damaged the water supply hose on Weston Road, stopping the flow of water for several minutes.

30 Weston firefighters responded, aided by counterparts from Westport, Wilton, Redding, West Redding, Georgetown, and Easton. The Ridgefield Fire Department provided coverage to the town.

Assistance was also provided by the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army of Danbury, Weston Public Works personnel, the Weston Police Department, Weston EMS, and the Westport police.

First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor thanked the agencies for their assistance, and also Aquarion, Eversource, and Southern Connecticut Gas Company. “I am grateful everyone is safe,” she said.

At noon on Friday, what’s left of the home was still smoldering. At least half a mile of firehose snaked down Route 57. Heavy equipment was brought in to remove debris so whatever remains can be extinguished.
