On Sunday November 10, author Jeffrey DeWitt discusses the WWII battle of Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest in the Pacific, a five-week fight where 100 Connecticut servicemen lost their lives.
Mr. DeWitt speaks about the battle and those servicemen at 2:00 at the Weston History & Culture Center. Copies of his latest book, “Connecticut Military Heroes of Iwo Jima,” will be available for purchase and signing.
The session is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so registration is encouraged. That said, walk-ins are welcome.
Mr. DeWitt’s book is part of a series he has written that includes titles on Medal of Honor recipients from Connecticut and the state’s heroes in the first and second world wars, Pearl Harbor, Korea, and Vietnam.
In the brief video below, we asked Mr. DeWitt to describe why Iwo Jima was a significant battle and to talk about one of its Connecticut heroes.
Proceeds from sales of the book go to the Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation in New Britain, where Mr. DeWitt is the foundation’s historian and a member of its board of directors.
Mr. DeWitt is a decorated 26-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He retired as a Chief Master Sergeant, the highest enlisted rank in the Air Force, a non-commissioned officer who provides strategic leadership and direction for enlisted personnel.
