In a podcast by the Y’s Men of Westport-Weston, Westport First Selectwoman Jen Tooker is joined by Conservation Director Colin Kelly to discuss Westport’s new ordinance regarding handheld and backpack gas-powered leaf blowers.

Mr. Kelly describes how the ordinance came into being and says it became active on May 15 of this year. He says his department receives written complaints and responds by sending violation notices to property owners, along with information such as a reading list about the benefits of electric leaf blowers.

Mr. Kelly says 113 complaints have been filed in the six weeks or so since the ordinance went into practical effect, resulting in the issuance of 85 notices. As for enforcement, he acknowledges that there is none, except that “we have enforcement by education.”
