Janet (Jan) Laing Hetterly died on November 7, 2023 in Trumbull, Conn. at 88 years old. She was a longtime resident of Weston (1968–1992), where she raised two sons.
She was born in Manilla, Philippines in 1935, the daughter of Captain Frederick Williams Laing (USN) and Margery Daley Laing and sibling of Frederick Williams Laing Jr., who predeceased her in 2014. She spent her childhood living all over the world until settling in Providence, R.I. in her high school years and was a 1957 graduate of Mount Holyoke College.
She was a housewife who enjoyed tennis at the Weston Field Club, gardening, and painting (which she became rather proficient at during the last 20 years of her life). Her main passions though were travel and music.
In the last 30 years of her life she made two international trips a year, documenting each trip in detail in scrapbooks. She was a member of the local “Pitchpipers” singing group for over 30 years and sang in the Emmanuel Church (Weston, Conn.) choir for some years, a church she was an active parishioner in for over 50 years. She had a zest and positiveness about life that few have and that will be missed.
She is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Jen Hetterly of Palo Alto, Calif. and Mark and Lissette Hetterly of Easton, Conn., as well as three grandchildren, Ashley, Katie and Anna.
