DOT Notice: Redding Bridge Replacement

Legal Notice/Scenic Roads
Town of Redding

Pursuant to Section 13b-31d of the General Statutes of the State of Connecticut regarding scenic roads, the Commissioner of Transportation announces the proposed bridge replacement of Bridge No. 01015 on Route 53 just south of the intersection of Glen Road and Newtown Turnpike in the town of Redding. The existing structure is a single span concrete encased steel girder superstructure founded on unreinforced concrete abutments. Due to the deteriorated substructure, the existing structure will be replaced with a single span steel plate girder superstructure founded on semi-integral reinforced concrete abutments.

The proposed project consists of removing the existing structure, installing semi-integral abutments with natural stream bed material, constructing four wingwalls on footings, installing five steel girders, constructing concrete deck and approach slabs, and installing 3-tube open rail parapets on the bridge and northwest wingwall. Overhead utilities in the project vicinity will be temporarily relocated. Underground utilities will be supported in place.

Work will require partial takes, permanent and temporary easements. Work is anticipated to begin in Fall 2026 and end in the Fall of 2027. During the time period of Spring 2027 and the Fall of 2027, the roadway will be closed, and traffic detoured to allow for the construction work.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is conducting a Public Information Meeting concerning the replacement of this bridge on Thursday June 27, 2024, at 7:00pm at the Redding Community Center in Redding, CT 06896.
