Expect traffic snarls in the area through much of today, following a major accident around 5:30 this morning on I-95.
In a media briefing, Governor Ned Lamont said a tractor trailer, a fuel truck, and a passenger vehicle were involved in a collision under the bridge at exit 15. There were no serious injuries, said the governor, but an ensuing blaze has seriously damaged the overpass.
At press time, I-95 is closed in both directions, and will remain so in all likelihood for at least several hours. “It’s a good day to work from home if you have that opportunity,” said Mr. Lamont, although the timing of the accident may have already foreclosed that option for many.
Utility wires are hanging down from the bridge, and an investigation is underway to assess its structural condition. “There is damage,” said Scott Hill, the Department of Transportation’s chief engineer, but the extent is not yet known. He said heat can deform steel, but the bridge is not collapsing.
One of the trucks involved was carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline. William Turner, the state’s emergency management director, said 6,500 gallons burned off or spilled into the Norwalk River, along with fire suppression foam. An operation is underway to contain and clean up the spill.
