A Day of Service to Honor Dr. King

For the fifth year, the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King will be celebrated with a Day of Service at Lachat Town Farm on the holiday in his honor.

The event takes place on Monday, January 15 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The idea is to take as little as an hour that day to give back and lend a hand to those in need. This year, support goes to the Homes With Hope charity, which provides emergency shelter, housing assistance, youth development programs, and food assistance in Fairfield County.

The way to contribute is simple. You can show up at Lachat and help assemble bags of essentials like toiletries and hygiene products. You can fill one or more bags for a donation of $20 per bag. The money goes to paying for the contents of each bag, items such as deodorant, shaving cream, soap, and the like. Or, you are welcome to simply make a donation for bags that will be filled by others.

You can register here. You can also bring nonperishable food items for donation to the Weston Food Pantry and the pantry at Westport’s Gillespie Center.

The Day of Service is designed to be a family event. Parents and kids can watch a video of Dr. King delivering his “I Have a Dream” speech, complete a craft project, and reflect on the day, its meaning, and Dr. King’s message.
