Cultures of the World at Lachat

The International Festival and Market at Lachat Town Farm runs on Saturday, September 30, a showcase of music, goods, food, and cultural representations of countries around the world.

It all takes place from noon to 4:00 pm.

Musical performances include sounds of the Caribbean by the Steel Drum Trio, rhythms of ancestral Japanese drums and the beautiful tones of bamboo flutes by Taikoza, and the Celtic harmonies of The Kerry Boys.

For the palate, it’s fresh locally-sourced produce, fried rice, dumplings, Thai soups, authentic flavors from Mexico and the Caribbean, vegan fare, and more.

Activities for the day include art, games, displays of traditional dress and dance, and demonstrations. Goods from a variety of cultures are on offer, including kimono clothing and accessories (with instruction on how to wear them) and gift items from as far away as Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Ukraine is one of the countries and cultures highlighted at the festival, where “Hearts for Ukraine” bracelets can be purchased, as can kits with instructions to make the bracelets at home. This is all part of a volunteer effort to raise funds to help residents in Weston’s embattled sister city, Siversk.

A special photography exhibition — curated by Richard Wiese, executive producer and host of the award-winning ABC/PBS TV show “Born to Explore” — connects Lachat’s agricultural heritage to farming practices around the world.

Parking and entry reservations can be made here. Spots on the lower field lot (at the Godfrey Road West entrance) are $30. Upper field parking (Ladder Hill Road South) is $20. Upper field spots can be paid either by advance reservation or at the entrance on a first-come first-served basis. The entry cost is per family and includes all entertainment and showcases, but not goods sold by vendors or food from trucks.
