“Westport What’s Happening”

In a podcast by the Y’s Men of Westport-Weston, Westport First Selectwoman Jen Tooker and Police Chief Foti Koskinas discuss motor vehicle thefts, including a recent carjacking incident.

Chief Koskinas says the carjacking was “an escalation” of the typical car theft, that the vehicle and others were recovered within 36 hours, and arrests have already been made.

In typical car thefts, he says, criminals find targets of opportunity in unlocked vehicles with keys left inside. These incidents are bad enough, he says, but the crimes in which the cars are used are even worse.

As for the most common thefts, the chief says an environment has been created where criminals know they can be successful. He says “prevention is a team effort” between police and citizens, and urges residents to lock their cars, activate alarms, and use proper lighting.

Ms. Tooker says an in-person community discussion takes place on Wednesday evening September 20 in the Westport Town Hall auditorium at 7:00.

New editions of the podcast appear on Mondays, alternating between Ms. Tooker and Weston First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor.
