On five dates in July and August, theater lovers can take a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the historic Westport Country Playhouse.

The tours are conducted by Playhouse archivist Bruce Miller on July 17, 22, 24 and August 5 and 7, in each case at 10:30 am. Tickets, which are free, can be reserved on the Playhouse website.

In the 92 years since a cow barn was transformed into the Westport Country Playhouse, more than 800 plays have been staged, 42 of them moving on to Broadway. Tour participants will be able to stand on the stage where luminaries like Paul Newman, James Earl Jones, Jane Fonda, Eartha Kitt, Gene Wilder, Leslie Odom Jr., and Patti LuPone have starred.

Mr. Miller will also share insight about the history of the Playhouse, how it inspired the creation of the classic musicals “Oklahoma!” and “My Fair Lady,” and how new technology has evolved. He will show participants around the backstage, greenroom, dressing rooms, scene shop, wardrobe room, posters, photos, costumes, and set models.

Private group tours may also be available. To inquire about scheduling one, contact house and events manager Kelly Richards Mikolasy by email: krichards@westportplayhouse.org.

From July 11 through the 29th, the curtain goes up on the latest Playhouse production, a new adaptation of “Dial M for Murder,” the classic suspense thriller of blackmail and revenge. More information about the show can be found on the Westport Country Playhouse website.
