Compo Open Water Swim Race, July 16

Editor’s Note: The swim has been postponed due to weather-related beach closures. A new date in August or September will be announced.

The Point-to-Point Compo Beach Open Water Swim, put on each year by the Westport Weston Family YMCA, takes place on Sunday morning, July 16.

The 44th annual charity event covers a one-mile loop, kicking off near the Compo Beach cannons.

Competitors from throughout the Northeast are drawn to the race, with swimmers in groups of five starting time trials every five seconds, beginning at 8:05 am. This year, organizers say an automated chip-based system will provide highly accurate results. The top three finishers are awarded prizes.

Registration, $60 before July 16, can be done online at westporty.org/44th. Beginning at 7:00 am on race day, in-person registration at Compo Beach is $75. All registered swimmers get an official Point-to-Point swim cap and t-shirt.

Kids can be registered for shorter races — 100 yards for ages 7 to 10, 200 yards for ages 11 to 14 — for $15.

Proceeds go to the Y’s aquatics programs, including swim lessons that equip children and adults at all levels with essential lifesaving water safety skills.

The YMCA partners again this year with My Team Triumph, a national non-profit organization that helps children, teens, adults and veterans with disabilities experience endurance events like open water swims, road races, and triathlons, often using specialized racing equipment. Special needs athletes wishing to participate must register in advance with My Team Triumph.

Volunteers are welcome to assist at the Point-to-Point Compo Beach Open Water Swim, and can contact the Y’s Josephine Rojas at jrojas@westporty.org.
