Loose Threads Quilt Show, December

The annual display of fine quilt artwork is currently on view in the Weston Public Library Community Room. The exhibition includes items call “shed quilts,” which have an interesting story.

The works on display are products of Weston’s Loose Threads Quilt Group, which for years has met weekly to take pieces of fabric and turn them into quilts like the ones you will see at the Library.

Several of the quilts are the work of group members Karin Giannitti and Dayna Harris. Ms. Giannitti tells us that Ms. Harris learned this year that a Barn Quilt Trail exists in New Milford, which the group followed this summer.

Ms. Giannitti says they “fell in love with yet another project — quilts painted on old barns along the roadways.”

She said the phenomenon started in Ohio in 2001 and is still going strong. Barn quilt trails can be found in all 50 states. People take their favorite patterns from the past and paint large pieces of plywood to hang on barns.

“We were so excited about this project,” said Ms. Giannitti, “but sadly, no one had a barn. But, we all have sheds!”

Ms. Harris took a class to learn how to paint these patterns on plywood squares measuring two feet by two feet. The group met at her house, picked patterns, and about three hours later each had a shed quilt to take home and place on their outbuildings.

Quilts created by the Weston Loose Threads Quilt Group will be on display at the Library throughout December.
