Salute Veterans, Friday at 11:11

Many groups and people are pitching in to make Friday’s Veterans Day a special event. The Town’s Veterans Committee hopes you will join the public ceremony on Friday morning, November 11 at 11:11 at the Memorial Garden on the Town Hall lawn.

Pitching in are the Weston Volunteer Fire Department, who will take care of all the sound gear, Daisies and Brownies who are making handcrafted thank-you cards for veterans, Weston High School’s American Heroes Club, who will present the Red, White and Blue wreath, and WesTones, the high school’s a capella group, singing the national anthem.

Rabbi Michael Friedman of Temple Israel will offer a prayer, and James Carlon will speak about the significance of Veterans Day. Mr. Carlon, a veteran and attorney, is also a member of Weston’s Planning and Zoning Commission. First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor will speak for the town.

Only for veterans, there is more on the day than the public ceremony alone.

Faculty and staff of Weston Middle School are preparing food for a continental breakfast for veterans, and students in grades six through eight will present a salute to them. Veterans can be transported back and forth to the school and Town Hall in a van provided by the Senior Center.

If it happens to rain, everything but the flag raising will be done inside Town Hall at 11:11 on Friday morning.

Members of the Veterans Committee organizing the Veterans Day event are Edward Hutchins, Al Fazi, and Kevin Dougherty, pictured below from left to right.
