EMS Sends Aid to Ukraine

On very short notice, Weston EMS volunteers pulled together and packed up three carloads and a trailer filled with medical supplies for delivery to Ukraine.

To launch the effort, EMS Chief Michael Schlechter connected with First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor and Iryna Akolzina, the Weston resident and native Ukrainian who has spearheaded a local collection effort.

EMS drew from its stock of personal protective equipment and tools for treating severe injury, including tourniquets, bag-mask-valve ventilation devices, and other trauma gear.

The supplies were taken to Meest, a global transportation company, for shipment by air and ground to the embattled city of Lviv. They will be packed and distributed by volunteers from Ukrposhta, Ukraine’s national postal service, and Novaposhta, an international shipping firm.

“Weston EMS has a mission,” said Mr. Schlechter. “Neighbors helping neighbors. Sometimes a neighbor is half a world away.”
