Melissa Walker, Board of Education

My husband and I moved to Weston 12 years ago because we believed it would be the perfect community in which to raise our family. An important attraction to us was the school system, and as our children have grown and progressed through the grades, we have benefitted from the extraordinary WPS experience. I continue to be impressed by the intelligence, professionalism, commitment and compassion of our teachers, administrators, and school staff, as well as by the impressive physical resources.

When I was approached this past year about filling a vacancy on the Board of Education, I was honored to give back to the community that has given so much to us. I continue to be proud of the accomplishments of the Weston public schools and the Board of Education, and am now running to be elected to a four-year term.

Weston is special because residents care deeply and appreciate the need to give back civically – a sentiment I share. Prior to joining the Board, I was on the Executive Boards – serving as the Board of Education Representative – of the PTOs of both Hurlbutt Elementary and the Intermediate School. In addition, for the past few years, I have taught religious education at St. Francis, and I’ve spent many years volunteering with adult literacy through the Norwalk Public Library. I’ve also served on the Board of Governors of the Weston Field Club.

These are challenging times economically in Weston and in Connecticut. The schools continue to draw new families to town. However, real estate revaluations, increased property taxes, and fiscal constraints in Hartford are straining our town’s ability to fund our town’s largest and most critical asset. It is imperative that we protect the value of Weston dollars by sensibly and thoughtfully managing the school budget and investing in the future of our children. As an experienced attorney and community volunteer, I am committed to critically overseeing the school district and its budget.

Please vote on Tuesday, November 5 for me and my fellow Republicans who are working together to keep Weston special!
