ADAP "Eats & Treats," October 10

ADAP, Weston's Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program, hosts its second annual "Eats & Treats" fundraiser on the evening of October 10. The event takes place at Aitoro Appliance, 401 Westport Avenue, Norwalk, from 6:00 to 8:30. There will be great food from top chefs and great music.

The non-profit ADAP has rapidly become one of the most important and successful programs going. In our July article about Weston's School Resource Officers, Captain Matthew Brodacki noted that police now respond to significantly fewer calls involving underage youth and alcohol. The captain and the SROs attribute that in large part to ADAP programs.

ADAP’s basic mission is to promote wellness among teens and families. Its High School Youth Wellness Council provides a forum for students to discuss the challenges they face, social and academic pressures, and how to make safe choices about alcohol and drugs. A similar council is to be launched at Weston Middle School.

ADAP organizes the annual alcohol-free Evergreen dance and other community events. On November 14 it is sponsoring a program about the dangers of vaping at the middle school, a session conducted by a prevention expert from Positive Directions in Westport.

Each spring, ADAP brings in a speaker to deliver an inspiring, engaging message about timely and relevant topics to high school students. ADAP runs a forum for rising freshmen and provides a free NARCAN training course each spring. NARCAN is a nasal spray that can reverse an opioid overdose. The organization works with Weston Police on the annual Take Back Day, focusing on the risks of keeping unused prescription drugs at home.

Proceeds from "Eats & Treats" will go to Weston's Youth Wellness Council and to Shatterproof, a national non-profit based in Norwalk that focuses on erasing the stigma associated with drug and alcohol addiction that can prevent people from seeking help.
