While the restrictions increase, they are necessary to stop the spread of the virus. In this current environment, health is on everybody’s mind. We also realize that some patients may be uncomfortable or unable to leave their homes during this time due to compromised immune systems or underlying health issues. Other patients may have been exposed to or are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19. For patient and staff safety, and peace of mind, AFC is now accepting patients for Telemedicine services. Telemedicine allows patients to consult with a physician about a number of medical issues via video call from the comfort of your own home.

While we are all quarantined in our homes, it is especially important that we find ways to keep our bodies healthy. Filling your plate with these foods can help decrease inflammation and improve airway function in the lungs:

  • Apples. We all know that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but a study showed that apples could help slow declining lung function over a 10-year period, especially for former smokers.

  • Green Tea. Green tea is filled with antioxidants and polyphenols that may help reduce inflammation in the lungs and may even protect lung tissue from the harmful effects of smoke inhalation.

  • Leafy Greens. Leafy greens like kale, spinach and arugula are packed with essential nutrients that can support lung health, including antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals.   • Turmeric. Turmeric is one of the best foods for your lungs thanks to its content of curcumin, the chemical that provides turmeric with its vibrant color and impressive health benefits. Research suggests that the anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric could aid in the treatment of several respiratory conditions, including asthma, COPD, acute respiratory distress syndrome, lung injury and pulmonary fibrosis.

Studies show that the potassium found in bananas helps the lungs contract and expand, which can prevent breathing problems. Processed ingredients, trans fats and fried foods are bad for lungs as they can promote inflammation and increase the formation of harmful free radicals. Other foods like processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages, refined vegetable oils and added sugars should also be limited as a party of a healthy, well-rounded diet.
