Weston Explores Valley Forge Road

A much-needed brief respite from heat and humidity greeted Westonites who took in the first Explore Valley Forge event on Saturday, September 1.

The road was closed to vehicles from 7:30 am to noon. 8:00 to 9:00 was reserved for serious adult bicyclists. After that, it was all for families. There was food, information tables, and a safe, scenic view for runners, walkers, bicyclists, and skaters.

The idea for the event was first proposed 10 years ago at the Planning & Zoning Commission by then-chairman and now-Selectman Stephan Grozinger. "I guess you could say I made the snowball and Parks & Rec threw it," he said.

In fact, this was a community-building initiative the new Board of Selectmen made a priority at the beginning of the year. Making it happen involved a coordinated effort by First Selectman Chris Spaulding, the Weston Police, Volunteer Fire Department, EMS, Board of Police Commissioners, and of course, Dave Ungar and Joe Parciasepe and the staff at Parks and Recreation.

Dr. Spaulding was pleased with results. "It was definitely a success," he said. "And I'm very pleased with the level of participation."

Several residents commented that a welcome benefit was the opportunity to chat with people they knew and some they didn't. The environment was relaxed, friendly, and fun.
